Bitcoin Seed Phrase — Everything You Need to Know
What Is a Seed Phrase?
A seed phrase (also called a mnemonic phrase or recovery phrase) is a list of 12 or 24 random English words generated when you create a Bitcoin wallet.
These words encode your wallet’s private key.
Anyone who has your seed phrase can access and spend all your Bitcoin.
Example (do not use):
Why Your Seed Phrase Is So Important
Your seed phrase = your Bitcoin.
Not your exchange account. Not your email. Not your password.
If your phone breaks, gets stolen, or you buy a new device, you can simply restore your wallet using your seed phrase.
No company needed. No password reset. No support ticket.
If you lose your seed phrase and lose access to your wallet, your Bitcoin may be lost forever.
No one can recover it — not the wallet company, not 1Bitcoin.ca, not the Canadian government.
How to Store Your Seed Phrase
Do
- ✅ Write it on paper immediately
- ✅ Store in a secure physical location
- ✅ Consider metal backup for fire/water resistance
- ✅ Make two copies in separate locations
- ✅ Tell a trusted family member for estate planning
Never
- ❌ Store in photos on your phone
- ❌ Upload to cloud storage or Google Drive
- ❌ Email it to yourself
- ❌ Type it into random websites or apps
- ❌ Share it with support agents or “advisors”
What If Someone Asks for Your Seed Phrase?
It is always a scam.
No legitimate exchange, wallet company, or support team will ever ask for your seed phrase.
If anyone asks for it, end the conversation immediately.
