Bitcoin Private Keys — What You Need to Know

Your private key is the most important thing in Bitcoin. Whoever holds the private key controls the Bitcoin. Period.

What Is a Private Key?

A Bitcoin private key is a 256-bit number — essentially a very large random number — that proves ownership of Bitcoin at a specific address.

In practice, you never see your private key directly. Instead, you work with a seed phrase (also called a mnemonic or recovery phrase): 12 or 24 randomly chosen English words that encode your private key.

Example seed phrase (never use this):

abandon ability able about above absent absorb abstract absurd abuse access accident

Your seed phrase generates your private key, which generates your Bitcoin address.

The Golden Rule

Whoever has your seed phrase controls your Bitcoin.

  • If you write it down and someone finds it: they have your Bitcoin
  • If you lose it and your device breaks: you may lose access forever
  • If you store it in a photo on your phone: you're at risk

How to Protect Your Seed Phrase

Do this
  • Write it on paper — immediately when you set up your wallet
  • Store in a secure physical location, such as a fireproof safe or safety deposit box
  • Consider metal backup for fire and water resistance
  • Keep multiple copies in separate locations for redundancy
Avoid this
  • Never store digitally: photo, email, cloud, or notes app
  • Never share with anyone — not 1Bitcoin.ca, not support agents, not advisors
  • Never enter online — any site asking for your seed phrase is a scam
