Lost Access to Your Wallet

Lost Seed Phrase

If you lost your seed phrase, the Bitcoin is almost certainly unrecoverable.

Bitcoin's security model means there is no "forgot password" — the seed phrase IS the key.

Lost Hardware Wallet

If you still have your seed phrase, you can fully recover your Bitcoin using a new wallet device.

Deleted Wallet App

Recoverable. Reinstall the wallet app and import your seed phrase.

Partial Seed Phrase

Specialized recovery tools such as Wallet Recovery Services or Dave Bitcoin may help brute-force missing words.

Results vary significantly.

Your seed phrase IS your Bitcoin.

If both your wallet and your seed phrase are lost, there is usually no recovery option.

Stolen Bitcoin

Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. If someone steals your Bitcoin and transfers it away, recovery is extremely difficult.

1. Report to Police

File a police report immediately and document the theft.

2. Contact CAFC

Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC):

1-888-495-8501

3. Preserve Evidence

Save transaction IDs, screenshots, emails, and scam communications.

4. Contact Your Exchange

Exchanges may help trace where stolen Bitcoin moved, especially if it reaches another regulated platform.

Important: Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed. This immutability is intentional and is part of Bitcoin's security model.

Bitcoin Recovery Scams

Warning: Many so-called "Bitcoin recovery services" are scams.

They request upfront payments, promise guaranteed recovery, and then disappear.

No legitimate service can guarantee Bitcoin recovery.

If someone promises guaranteed recovery in exchange for a fee, it is almost certainly fraudulent.

How to Protect Yourself Going Forward

Write Down Your Seed Phrase

Store your seed phrase on paper — never digitally.

Use Secure Storage

Keep backups in a fireproof safe or secure physical location.

Never Share It

No legitimate company or support team will ever ask for your seed phrase.

Use Hardware Wallets

For larger Bitcoin holdings, hardware wallets provide stronger protection.

Best practice: Test your recovery backup before storing large amounts of Bitcoin.
