Can You Buy Bitcoin Through TD Bank?

TD Bank does not offer a Bitcoin purchasing service. You cannot buy, sell, or hold Bitcoin directly through TD Online Banking, TD My Advantage, or any TD financial product.

TD does offer Bitcoin ETF exposure through its brokerage arm, TD Direct Investing (formerly TD Waterhouse), where you can buy ETFs like BTCC or FBTC inside registered accounts.

Sending an Interac e-Transfer from TD to Buy Bitcoin

Most Canadians buy Bitcoin by sending an Interac e-Transfer from their bank to a regulated exchange like 1Bitcoin.ca.

From TD, this works — but here's what you need to know.

  1. Log into your TD banking app or online banking
  2. Go to Interac e-Transfer → Send Money
  3. Add the recipient email shown in your 1Bitcoin.ca account
  4. Enter your account reference code in the message field
  5. Send your e-Transfer

TD Daily e-Transfer Limits

  • Standard: $3,000/day
  • Enhanced: Up to $10,000/day (available to most customers)

Why TD Sometimes Blocks Bitcoin Purchases

TD's fraud detection system may flag or temporarily hold e-Transfers sent to Bitcoin exchanges — especially on a customer's first transaction.

This is usually not a permanent block.

If TD blocks your transfer:

  1. Call TD at 1-800-387-0462 and explain you are sending funds to a FINTRAC-registered exchange (1Bitcoin.ca Registration: M21226416)
  2. Start with a smaller transfer ($200–500 CAD) to establish a transaction history
  3. Consider a bank wire for larger purchases ($5,000+)

Most TD customers successfully send e-Transfers to 1Bitcoin.ca. The first transfer is sometimes the most difficult, but once approved, future transfers are generally smoother.

TD and Bitcoin ETFs

If you want Bitcoin exposure inside a TD account, you can buy Bitcoin ETFs through TD Direct Investing.

  • Available in TFSA, RRSP, and non-registered accounts
  • No special approval required

  • Popular tickers: BTCC, FBTC, BTCX, EBIT

The Bottom Line

TD Bank does not sell Bitcoin directly, but TD customers can easily fund a 1Bitcoin.ca account using Interac e-Transfer.

If TD blocks your first Bitcoin-related transfer, a quick phone call is often enough to resolve the issue.
