Bitcoin for Couples in Canada
More Canadian couples are choosing to hold Bitcoin as part of their joint financial plan.

Bitcoin itself doesn't have a "joint account" feature — each Bitcoin address is controlled by whoever holds the private key(s).
However, couples can structure ownership in different ways:
Option 1: Shared Wallet
Each partner has their own 1Bitcoin.ca account but sends Bitcoin to a shared wallet address.
Both partners hold a copy of the seed phrase.
Option 2: One Account
One partner manages the account, while both partners are aware of the holdings.
Both should have access to the seed phrase for estate purposes.
Option 3: Multisig Wallet
A multi-signature wallet requires 2-of-2 or 2-of-3 signatures to authorize transactions.
Both partners must agree to move funds. Technical, but most secure.
Tax Considerations for Couples
In Canada, Bitcoin is taxed as property. Each person is taxed on their own capital gains.
If you're buying Bitcoin using shared funds, document the proportional ownership clearly.
If one partner earns income and the other doesn't, the attribution rules may apply — consult a tax advisor.
Estate Planning
If one partner dies and the other doesn't have access to the private key or seed phrase, the Bitcoin may be permanently lost.
Essential steps:
